City of San Jose (CA) Public Safety Selects MapText’s Label-EZ Text Placement Software

Plainsboro, New Jersey - April 19, 2006

The Police and Fire Departments at the City of San Jose (CA) have successfully implemented MapText's automatic text placement software, Label-EZ, to generate a new street name text layer for use in their Intergraph Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.

The City of San Jose implemented a new computer-aided-dispatch (CAD) system in June, 2004. This system uses GIS and GPS to spatially locate emergency events and emergency vehicles, thus making accurate GIS data a necessity. The GIS street name text layer that was initially used in the CAD was not specifically designed for public safety use. Hence, a new process for creating and maintaining an up-to-date text layer was necessary.

Staff from the City's Public Works Department, which also uses Label-EZ in its mapping workflow, suggested using this software to generate a new text layer for the CAD system. Regularly updated data from the Public Works Department is exported, processed, and loaded into the CAD database. After this process is completed, updated text layers are generated in a very short time. This new workflow ensures that the latest information is available for use in the CAD system.

"The City's Public Safety staff is pleased with this new text layer. After a few training sessions with a MapText representative, we were able to produce an updated text layer that is easier to read and is customized to meet our needs." City of San Jose's GIS Coordinator for Public Safety, Earl Harris, commented.

"MapText is proud to provide high-quality text placement technology to satisfy the rigorous mapping requirements from the Public Safety department of the City of San Jose. The City of San Jose is a great example of how the complete suite of text-placement solutions offered by MapText can benefit multiple departments within a city." added Rishi Mehra, MapText's Director of Sales and Business Development.
