Plainsboro,
New Jersey - August 23, 2006
MapText, Inc. MapText, Inc. and the City of
Hamilton, Ontario, have announced that Label-Web has been successfully
integrated into the City's comprehensive web mapping service.
The City's mapping services are wide-ranging and informative. Beyond general
street maps, citizens can get accurate and up-to-date information about
schools, child care centers, waste collection days (color coded by area), bus
routes, water hydrant locations, tax impact analysis, current and historical
aerial photography, and ongoing capital projects.
And now with Label-Web, the City is able to present aesthetic web maps of the
highest cartographic quality in a dynamic on-the-fly manner.
Label-Web places text in accordance with cartographic rules and conventions,
avoids text-to-text and text-to-feature overlap (unless expressly allowed),
and ensures unambiguous text-to-feature association. Most importantly, it
achieves aesthetic, high-quality label placement so as to enhance rapid visual
comprehension, while maintaining high performance suitable for interactive
display over the Internet.
Label-Web can be easily integrated into a server-side script by adding a few
lines of code to include the Label-Web application and initiate the text
placement.
According to Al Little, Manager of GIS Services for the City of Hamilton, "Without
appropriate descriptive labels, the value and usability of most maps is
greatly reduced. The importance of this is magnified tenfold when it comes to
interactive web mapping, where much of the display control is surrendered by
the cartographer to the end-user. Label-Web software produces on-the-fly
map labels based on our design rules, while allowing the end-user complete
control over what they see, and at whatever scale they desire. Consequently,
City of Hamilton citizens, businesses, and visitors using Map.Hamilton will
notice a dramatic improvement in our online mapping."
"MapText is proud to be a part of the City of Hamilton's efforts to provide
their citizens with up-to-date, accurate, and high-quality street and thematic
maps over the Web," Shailesh Chanekar, MapText's Sales Manager, commented.
