California Department of Transportation Adopts MapText's Label-EZ

Plainsboro, New Jersey - July 10, 2007

The The California Department of Transportation successfully integrated MapText's labeling software, Label-EZ, into its mapping workflow that allows users to map and analyze transportation information quickly and efficiently.

The California DOT has been producing California Road System maps, which consist of 1715 individual maps, each showing functional classification of roads based on Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines. Every map goes through a rigorous FHWA approval process before getting certified and published.

Name placement on these maps is one of the most time-consuming tasks. It used to take the DOT team up to a week to produce an aesthetically labeled map. A high-performance and high-cartographic-quality labeling software was needed to speed up production while preserving superb map quality. After rigorous evaluation and testing, California DOT decided to integrate Label-EZ in their workflow. Map finishing averaged two days per map with their old method; MapText's solution catapulted them to less than a half hour per map – a huge productivity gain.

MapText's high-end Label-EZ product caters to the needs of transportation departments to generate high-quality paper maps in all major GIS environments. It provides the users with provides the highest cartographic quality, great flexibility, and advanced capabilities such as leadering, key-numbering, stacking, route shield placement, and much more.

"Using Label-EZ we recently completed 170 maps in about 30 net hours. Editing time for congested maps is taking minutes compared to hours or days", Alan Kepler of the California DOT, commented.

"MapText is proud of the fact that the prestigious California DOT has selected Label-EZ for their map production. We know that the agency has rigorous mapping requirements and we are glad to hear that they have saved enormous amounts of time and money by using our text placement software," added Shailesh Chanekar, MapText's Sales Manager.
