MapText offers two extensions for Label-EZ. One for post-editing and one for creating high-quality contour maps.

Label-Edit -- powerful post-editing tool

Label-Contour -- creates high-quality elevation contour maps

Label-Edit's powerful post-editing capabilities can be used to edit or adjust the text placed by Label-EZ.  Similar to Label-EZ, Label-Edit is also available for all major GIS systems. A few selected functionalities are described below.

The Label-Edit Toolbar

Reposition Label

The 'Reposition Label' tool can be used to move curved line- or area-feature text.

Create Leader Line

Leaders can have as many segments as desired and can have any of 12 different arrowhead styles.

Arrowhead styles for leader lines. A leader is created for 'Mallard Lake'.

Adjust Character Spacing

This tool adjusts the spacing between characters of label text associated with a selected area feature.

The name 'LUTHER' with normal and increased character spacing.

Compose Label

Use this command to compose a multi-word label into a single, straight label. After the label is composed, use the 'Reposition Label' tool to move the label. The label will become curved again and will follow the curvature of its associated feature.

Restore Suppressed Labels

Use this tool to restore and then manually adjust labels that Label-EZ was not able to place under the rules specified.

The suppressed name 'COMMONS PLZ' is restored. The placement conflict (overlapping labels) is resolved by manually repositioning both labels.

Create Key Table

When allowed by the user, Label-EZ will create keynumbers for those features that cannot be labeled otherwise due to lack of space. To easily identify those features, their keynumbers can be organized in a key table. Then the table can be positioned by the user anywhere on the screen.

An area containing several keynumbers is selected (red rectangle). Then a Key Table is created and positioned for optimal viewing. Keynumbers are arranged in increasing order.

Label-Contour places the elevation (or depth) labels for a contour map according to precise cartographic requirements. Placement is completely automatic and performed in a matter of seconds.

Contour maps are employed to display elevation/depth information of terrain. They are widely used by geological survey organizations, by the military, by earth resources companies, for meteorological purposes, and for sea-bottom exploration and underwater cable laying.

Elevation information on contour maps should be placed in a way that the layout of the labels conveys terrain information that is easy to interpret, avoids conflict with other labels, and provides the highest aesthetic and cartographic quality possible. In other words, the reader of the map should be able quickly and easily to comprehend the terrain structures displayed. For example, according to cartographic conventions, contour labels are normally placed “upward” or “downward”. The labels for a mountain are stepping up, with the top edges of text facing the peak, and the labels for a basin or crater are stepping down, with the bottom edges of text facing the bottom of the depression.

Aesthetically labeled contour map. Elevation numbers are 'stepping up' to the peak from several directions, making it easy to understand the terrain.
